Meharry School of Global Health Unveils New Women’s Health Master’s Concentration

Meharry School of Global Health Unveils New Women’s Health Master’s Concentration

Now accepting applications for the Master of Health Equity degree program.

Nashville, TN, March 5, 2025 – This March, in honor of women’s history month, the School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College is pleased to introduce a new master’s concentration to our Master of Science in Health Equity degree.

The women’s health concentration provides a comprehensive study of health needs, influences, and contexts affecting women throughout their lives—from infancy to old age. This new addition to the MS in Health Equity was born out of a need to address and respond to recent research demonstrating a decline in women’s health. “Despite living longer than men, women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health” (2025), as reported by the world economic forum and even more concerning, according to the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) forecasts, “the US would drop from 51st to 74th in life expectancy for women in 2050 and from 51st to 65th for males” (2025).

In this concentration, students will explore fundamental gendered health concerns, research methodologies, and key upstream and contextual drivers of health disparities while gaining expertise in related areas of leadership, policy, communication, and advocacy using real-world case studies, data, and engagement with luminaries from across sectors – providing graduates with the skills to advance women’s health worldwide.

This program aims to equips practitioners with practical knowledge, skills and tactics to close gender health gaps and turn “women’s health” into “optimal health” for every person at every stage. MS in Health Equity students will be able to add this concentration to their program beginning this Fall 2025.
