Dr. Rosemary Nabaweesi Joins the School of Global Health

We are excited to welcome Dr. Rosemary Nabaweesi to the School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College as an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Determinants of Health. Dr. Nabaweesi brings a rich blend of global and local public health expertise, guided by her passion for addressing health and educational inequities worldwide.

A physician scientist by training, Dr. Nabaweesi has dedicated her career to exploring how social and political forces shape health outcomes, particularly in trauma, maternal and child health. Her research delves deep into the intersection of these determinants, offering new insights and strategies for advancing health equity for marginalized communities.

Her recent publication on the Built Environment as a Social Determinant of Health is a powerful exploration of how the spaces we live in can both perpetuate and mitigate health disparities, particularly among underserved populations. Dr. Nabaweesi’s multidisciplinary approach – blending epidemiology, qualitative research, implementation science, and policy analysis – ensures that her work not only broadens our understanding of these complex issues but also translates into real-world interventions.

Dr. Nabaweesi’s commitment to global health is evident through her collaborative efforts with international and domestic teams. Her ongoing research continues to shed light on critical health challenges, from maternal health in low-resource settings to the complex relationship between HIV and COVID-19. Through her work, she strives to inspire the next generation of health equity leaders and innovators.

We are honored to have Dr. Rosemary Nabaweesi join our School, where her profound expertise and dedication to health equity will empower and inspire our students to become the next generation of changemakers, driving meaningful progress in global health and social justice
