Renowned Scholar Fazal Khan, MD, JD, Joins School of Global Health

We are thrilled to announce the esteemed addition of Fazal Khan, MD, JD, to our School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College as the department chair for population health and professor of health law, policy, and management. Dr. Khan brings a wealth of expertise from his tenure at the University of Georgia School of Law, where his scholarly pursuits and pedagogical endeavors have centered on the intersection of law, healthcare, artificial intelligence, technology, and ethics.

 

His scholarship, research, and teaching utilize an interdisciplinary approach to complex health issues, which include an array of groundbreaking research projects and seminal articles, such as the assessment of elder abuse laws, FDA law, and the regulation of epigenetic harms in consumer products. Notably, his work extends to ethical considerations surrounding human drug trials in developing countries and principles governing government accountability during public health emergencies. Dr. Khan’s research has been funded by the NIH and AHRQ and has explored the ethical, legal, and social implications of epigenetics research.

 

He chaired the University of Georgia Institutional Review Board, the American Association of Law Schools: Section on BioLaw, and the A.A.L.S: Section on Law, Medicine & Healthcare. Dr. Khan received the prestigious Health and Aging Policy Fellowship and the American Policy Science Association’s Congressional Research Fellowship.

 

He completed his medical doctor and juris doctor degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and obtained his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago.

 

Dr. Khan’s expertise has not gone unnoticed, as he has been sought after by various media outlets, such as BBC, NPR, and MarketWatch as an expert commentator on matters ranging from national healthcare reform to governmental responses to public health emergencies.
